There should be a caption on the profile picture, but Flannery doesn't know how to work this machine she's using. The caption would say something like,"Plunge into the mess." She drew the picture herself because she doesn't have a camera and she wants you all to see what she really looks like most days. The thing she's holding is a plumber's helper. Look how excited she is!

Flannery taught writing at a private school until budget cuts forced her out. "Your position has been eliminated," said the letter of termination.

Note how the person who wrote the letter used the passive voice to make it seem as if the position somehow got itself eliminated. "These things just happen," is the message, "all by themselves."

She's not bitter. She simply can't help teaching how language ought to be examined.
